Welcome to Payment Certified Professional (PCP) Operations Training Track. This track delves further and provides more in-depth knowledge on payments. It is therefore assumed that you have concluded the Payment Certified Associate (PCA) Training Track.

The Payment Certified Professional Track consists of five modules intended to give you enough practical training to enable you to effectively understand the workings of a payment switch. The modules concentrate on those tasks that you will need to perform to keep the Payment Switch operating optimally.

It is expected that on completion of this Professional Track, you will have good working knowledge of managing and supporting a payment system.



Module 1 - Overview

This module is an overview of operations. Module 1 is divided into five topics. In the first topic, we are going to look at the overview of operations. In the second topic, we are going to look at Realtime issuing and acquiring. In the third topic, we are going to look at the Back-Office processing. In the fourth topic, we are going to look at transactional product processing, and finally, in the last topic, we are going to take a closer look at fraud and security management.

At the end of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Have an overview of the E-Payments infrastructure and participants
  • Understand the basic E-Payments concepts and terminology
  • Identify different payment tokens and how they facilitate the payment process
  • Appreciate the E-Payments suite of products, their functionality and the business opportunities available



Module 2 - Realtime

An EFT system needs to ensure transaction messages between entities such as acquirers, card issuers, merchants and processors in an EFT environment are sent to the correct destinations. We call this Routing. In Postilion Realtime EFT system, Transaction Manager is a key component for routing. Source and Sink nodes are connection points in Transaction Manager that allows transactions to be routed through interfaces. Transaction Manager performs several other functions aside from routing. These functions are Transaction Integrity, which ensures that transactions are not lost in the event of communication failure between Realtime systems. Card Validation Checks handles Luhn check, sequence number and expiry dates. Acquirer Stand-in functions through the acquirer sink node configuration, whilst Issuer Authorization operates through the issuer sink node configuration and finally, currency conversion.

A Realtime system also provides a query console for management of customer complaints, investigation and system audit. In Postilion Realtime, several query consoles exist, such as, transaction query console, cards query console, audit trail query console, currency conversion query console and merchant query console.

An EFT system administrator should be enlightened on how to make use of the Realtime tools that are available for trouble shooting purposes. Postilion Realtime system provides a range of tools that an administrator can work with prior to escalation. These tools are the Realtime Monitoring Console, Trace Logs, Documentation, Transaction Query Console and System Information.

At the end of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Have an overview of transactions and how routing takes place
  • Understand how authorization happens
  • Have knowledge of the configuration, monitoring and querying of a Realtime Processing System
  • Troubleshoot transactions on the Realtime Processing System
  • Understand terminal monitoring



Module 3 - PostCard

PostCard is a card management product that forms part of the family of Electronic Funds Transfer products and is closely integrated with Realtime's Transaction Manager. PostCard offers a range of services which entails card production, PIN Management, Card Activation and Authorization of Transactions. 

At the end of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Have an in-depth view of the card operations management processes such as Card Production, Card Activation and PIN Management
  • Understand the principles of validation and authorization services available to issuers when processing transactions
  • Have knowledge of the configuration procedures available and often required by issuers in order to manage cardholder or card transaction risk



Module 4 - Back-Office Processing

Cardholders do not always have an account at the same bank as the card acceptor, which is the merchant of ATM. These transactions are then routed via a card association or network to the appropriate issuer. The issuer is responsible for authorizing transactions made by the cardholder and is also expected to provide information with regards to the cardholders as the need arises.

The term payment transaction cycle refers to how money, or more generally, value flows between EFT entities. There are also surcharge and non-surcharge fees on transactions depending on which EFT entity is being dealt with. The Back-Office Processing System is essentially a back-up of the Realtime Processing System. This enables post-transaction processing. The Back-Office framework's primary function is to synchronize data between the Back-Office database and the Realtime Processing System's database.

The Back-Office has components that make use of the data transferred to perform multiple functions. It also consists of plug-ins which tailor these components to requirements. Dispute Management is used to maintain transaction integrity. Integrity is when the customer's view is the same as the issuer's view. When a dispute occurs, it requires investigation by all parties facilitating the value delivered to the customer. Terms, concepts, dispute flow and dispute evidence are all concepts used to manage a dispute.

At the end of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Define the roll of Transaction Stakeholders and life cycles when card associations are involved
  • Explain the Back-Office System Architecture and its functionality
  • Demonstrate how to manage a dispute



Module 5 - Security

In this module, we are going to look at Fraud and Security Management. You understand fraud investigations for card present and card not present transactions, cardholder authentication method, card verification, EMV, message authentication, tokenization and risk management. We will look at the types of fraud techniques in the industry, the fraud cycle, the impact of fraud to issuers, acquirers and merchants and at the transaction security services that are provided to stakeholders. We will also look at how fraud managers can build a fraud team and understand the best practices in the industry and the emerging fraud management technologies.

At the end of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Recall the Fraud Life Cycle
  • Recognize an effective Fraud Risk Management Framework
  • Maintain and manage the fraud investigation team and customer service officers
  • Understand EMV concepts, the special conditions and methods used to authorize transactions
  • Manage the risks of the Card Management System
